Long imagined as the archetypal faithful \u2018waiting wife\u2019, Penelope faces the challenges of separation and the struggles to assert her own identity which are still familiar to the partners of military personnel today. Her story also illustrates how the process of reunion after a long separation can be complex and difficult. Drawing comparisons between the Homeric Penelope and her twenty-first century counterparts can shed light on the psychological processes and emotions associated with being married to a soldier. It also enables us to explore some of the gendered expectations placed upon those who remain behind when service personnel are on active service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>H \u03bf\u03bc\u03b9\u03bb\u03af\u03b1
